Open land in the crowded south-east of England is often contested land, with planning restrictions making it tough for leisure developers to create large, state-of-the-art health and fitness clubs. This is despite growing concern about individual health and well-being, and a booming market.
Our work on the prestigious Amida Club at Hampton successfully addressed the many challenges associated with taking a sports and leisure project from concept right through to opening.
We initially identified the potential for the club while advising on a potential residential development of the site. We tested the concept before assisting in the selection of a suitable commercial development partner. The commercial partner then retained us to manage the entire planning process, including coordination of leisure and transport assessments.
The site included Metropolitan Open Land and the application was referred to the Government Office for London. After consideration, planning permission was confirmed in 2002.
The showpiece Amida Club at Hampton opened in January 2004 and went on to win the Property Week / Leisure Forum award for the best stand-alone leisure project for that year.
