Indigo picks up the “Heritage and Culture” RTPI Regional Award for Planning Excellence
Indigo received the accolade for their work on the Backbarrow Ironworks scheme located within the Lake District National Park. Indigo assisted the development of a site containing 17 part-built live work units, two large vacant offices and the remnants of Backbarrow Ironworks – a charcoal fuelled furnace built in 1711, believed to be the only remaining example of its type – considered one of the most at-risk industrial plots in England.
The RTPI judges commented:
"...in conservation terms this is an excellent project and the works to preserve and repair/consolidate have been well executed. The Judges were impressed that the Developers and the Trust had carried out repairs to the Ironworks in advance of occupation - this is commendable as they are often costly, time consuming and left to the end of the project."
